the continent & the world
Chögyal Namkhai Norbu has arranged the structure of his communities in a
unique way. The central seat of each community is called a Gar. Each Gar is
administered by a rotating volunteer group of practitioners, called a Gakyil
(pronounced gon’ shee), and coordinated internationally by another such
group called the International Gakyil. This structure is not arbitrary, but
central to one of Rinpoche’s teachings which concerns the importance of
collaboration among the Dzogchen Sangha.
Each Gar may contain various
smaller communities within its larger geographical area. Tsegyalgar,
in addition to its primary base in Conway, Massachusetts,
consists of communities and Gakyils in New York, Miami, Hawaii,
New Mexico and California.

at the gar
Tsegyalgar at Conway, Massachusetts provides beginning students with
frequent opportunities to meet the Teachings, and more advanced
practitioners a chance to deepen their practice. Special practice days and
practice weekends offer a group setting for learning and participating in
the practices provided by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu. Local and visiting
Community teachers lead instruction in beginning and advanced Yantra Yoga
and Vajra Dance. And the Gar often hosts visiting Tibetan Buddhists for
one-night and weekend teachings at the Tsegyalgar Schoolhouse in Conway, and in nearby
Northampton, Massachusetts.
