Restaurants

Ajanta
Amsterdam between 120th and 121st Sts.
Indian, nice staff and a decent lunch special. Try the mango lassi.

Amsterdam Cafe
Amsterdam between 119th and 120th Sts.
Also a bar, does a good greasy breakfast. If you partied too hard the night before, then come here in the morning for a cure. Not to be confused with Cafe Avenue up the block.

Bengal Cafe
Amsterdam between 110th and 111th Sts.
Standard Indian food, they serve Indian Sunday brunch.

Cafe Taci
Broadway and 110th St.
An Italian restaurant famous for its Opera Night, wherein opera singers belt out their favorites over dinner. Note: Some find the overpowering voices inspirational; others, just plain overpowering--caveat emptor!

Caffe Pertutti
Broadway and 113th St.
Well-done Italian fare, with good bread to go along. Large selection of desserts, for after-dinner or to go. Try the Eggplant Sorrentina...

Camille's
Amsterdam and 116th St. (SE)
Lots of pasta, with an Italian twist. Burgers are worth trying, too.

Columbia Cottage
Amsterdam and 111th St. A Chinese restaurant, also with Shanghai menus. Another well-regarded eatery. See if they still serve free wine.

Deluxe
Broadway and 113th St.
Another of the new crop of restaurants on the Strip, this faux-diner's service has improved dramatically in the past 6 months.

Dynasty
Broadway and 110th St.
Another busy Chinese restaurant, perhaps a notch above Ollies in taste and decor. Has lunch specials, plus the steamed sole is very good.

Le Monde
Broadway between 112th and 113th Sts.
This bistro has a great wine list; the outdoor area is a great place to see and be seen. Oh yeah, the food is great, too.

Nacho Mamas
Broadway between 112th and 113th Sts.
Mexican food. The wings are worth revisiting. The Margaritas are the real draw, and rightly so. Occasional DJ parties on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Ollies
Broadway and 116th St. (with locations at Lincoln Center and Times Square)
Poised at the main gate, this Chinese spot is always busy. Solid, if unremarkable, Chinese fare. Eclectic assortment of non-Chinese favorites.

Symposium
113th St. between Broadway and Amsterdam
This incredibly long-standing restaurant serves Greek fare. Mixed reviews for the food overall, but the good items are REALLY good.

The Heights
Broadway between 111th and 112th Sts., above Samad's Deli
Great addition to the strip. Inside and rooftop dining area, and a nice bar. Excellent brunch menu, to boot.

The Mill
Broadway between 112th and 113th Sts.
The only Korean fare on the strip, quite good, especially the inexpensive lunch menu.

The West End
Broadway between 114th and 115th Sts.
Another bar posing as a restaurant. An old Columbia stand-by, once frequented by the famous Beat Crowd gang in the 1940s. Favorite of undergrads, especially Greeks.

Sapphire Indian Cuisine
1845 Broadway, New York, NY 10023
Phone: 212-245-4444 Fax: 212-245-9145
New York times calls it the most lavish Indian restaurant in New York. Prime choice before or after theater because of its proximity to Lincoln Center. Groups: 5-125.

Terrace in the Sky
400 West 119th Street, New York, NY 10027
Phone: 212-666-9490 Fax: 212-666-3471
French. Penthouse restaurant with panoramic view. Light French cuisine with Mediterranean influences. Harp music. Outdoor terrace. Closed Mon. Multilingual. Groups: 25-150. Meeting rooms: 2. Capacity: 25-200.

Toast
Broadway and 124th St.
New, and on Time-Out New York's list for recommended eateries in this area.

Tomo Sushi Bar
Broadway and 111th St. (SE)
Newish (and only) sushi place on the strip. Reviews range from quite high praise to barely disguised scorn. Try it once and judge for yourself.

Tom's Restaurant
Broadway and 112th St.
The quintessential American diner. Featured in Seinfeld and in a rather good song by Suzanne Vega. Unpretentious food, fast service, no better recommendation.

V&T Pizzeria
Amsterdam between 110th and 111th Sts.
Family style Italian restaurant; their pizza gets rave reviews!
